This is the customized Wal Fretless Bass I've played since 1983 - although it didn't actually look like this 'till 1994 when I had a new Fender-style body made by the Wal people. The beautiful Sycamore wood veneer used for the body facing was apparently found in a skip in Leeds. The neck is much slender than a regular Wal neck (which is unfathomably chunky for no good reason). This is more like an old-fashioned Fender Jazz bass. The body had excessive amounts of wood carved from the back and front at my request (where your hand drops down to the playing position). This makes it much more comfortable and a lot lighter than a regular Wal - which weighs an absolute ton...I should know...I struggled through the Stump days with one. I tend to play it with a high action - the very opposite of how I like my acoustic guitars set up. Incidently, I've never felt the need to 'upgrade' to 5 strings - 4 are quite enough, thank you.
Although my interest in the bass guitar as an instrument has faded dramatically in the last few years, ( I confess, I hardly ever play it now ) I can honestly say that it's the best bass I have ever played and no other I've encountered comes close in terms of balance, comfort and tone.

I like small-bodied acoustic guitars. I don't own any electrics. I still haven't found the perfect one yet - none of these guitars are quite right. I have to work hard on my guitar playing - it doesn't really come naturally to me and it's a totally different technique to playing a big, heavy instrument with thick strings -like the bass guitar. Playing a guitar suits me at the moment as I'm writing songs and need a chordal instrument.
From left to right: Crafter travel guitar - with a spruce top -perfect for playing in bed or on the sofa, Tanglewood TW-145SC - cedar-topped, bright, sparkly and records well but it's neck-heavy, has misaligned strings and is as ugly as sin, J.Perez P-650 cutaway cedar -topped, nylon-strung - sounds rich and loud for a slim body but suffers from poor intonation, Tanglewood TW-73 parlour - *SOLD*. They're all Asian manufactured apart from the Perez. Last but not least -a Charlie Blackwood Musical Saw (with custom handle) on the sofa above.
